When I grew up, I was pretty much a fan of the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Animals, and Chad & Jeremy. I never really cared for the junk band, *Rolling Stones.* During my first year of college, the Stones recorded a song called, *I*m Free.* The lyrics on this masthead are from that song. The song was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. What*s so interesting is that I didn*t realize until recently that the words form the background to a popular commercial * the Chase Freedom Credit Card. It features a butterfly, freely flying through the air and saying, *Introducing Chase Freedom. It feels like no other credit care in the world, and it works like no other credit care too. Feel free to choose cash back, and then change the points, and then change again, all with the same card and without losing a thing. That*s freedom, Chase Freedom. Get it free at Chase.com/Freedom.* *

The people stood watching Him, and the leaders of the Church sneered at Him. “He saved others, let Him save Himself if He is the King of the Jews.” (Luke 23) The Roman soldiers came up and mocked Him. They offered Him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.” There was a written notice above His head which read, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who hung on the cross hurled insults at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us.” But the other criminal rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this Man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus remember me when You come into Your Kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with Me in paradise.”

With the tough times facing many of the people in our nation, it’s interesting to note the resolutions people make each New Year. People have shown that they’re more focused on the real things of life. Family and relationships seem to always be near the top of resolutions, but this year it’s especially high on the priority list. There’s an indication that many people are becoming less materialistic than before. And why not?! In the last two years our country has taken on more debt for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren than the first two hundred years of our nation’s history combined!!

Would thing have been different if the travelers from the East were women? Probably. They would have arrived months earlier because they would have stopped earlier to ask for directions. They would’ve cleaned up the barn a little. And, in addition to the gold, frankincense and myrrh, the would’ve cooked a casserole Mary and Joseph could heat up for supper one night.
What do we know about these magi? Not much. Where were they from? The “East.” How many were there? We know of at least three because of the gifts, but most travelers in those days never hazarded to travel without an entourage. The second century theologian, Tertullian started the story that these were kings because the Old Testament prophecy said kings would bow down before the Messiah.
